Seminar on Internet Governance
September 1, 2006, New Delhi

FICCI in partnership with Department of Information Technology, Government of India organized a seminar on 'Internet Governance' on 1st September 2006 at FICCI, Federation House, Tansen Marg, New Delhi to discuss issues associated with Internet Governance for consumers and industry.

The Internet is an "enabling technology" and as it proliferates its associated applications (e.g., e-governance, e-commerce, e-banking, e-learning etc.) will fuel economic growth and development. While Internet creates a vast array of opportunities it also presents numerous challenges.

Cost of Internet connectivity and also its diversity in terms of multilingualism and local content related to bridging the digital divide is an important issue in the Indian context. There are also a growing number of governance issues like fraud on the Internet, cyber crime, cyber security, privacy, data protection and freedom of expression and human rights that need clearly defined policy interventions.

The FICCI seminar focused on above-mentioned issues to prepare an action plan for the future.
