A. J. Jaganathan has a background in investment and merchant banking, particularly related to infrastructure project finance. He has a Masters degree in Physics (Telecom), besides having attended several specialist UK and US business school programmes. After an early banking career in India and the UK, he was Deputy Chief Executive Officer Standard Chartered Bank's Indian and South/South East Asia Investment banking operations. Subsequently he became active in Middle East banking before moving on to North America in 1995.

He left the world of banking to join Emaar Properties in 2000. Emaar is a young, high profile, successful, Dubai-based real estate development business. Publicly listed on the Dubai stock exchange, 32% of its equity is vested with the Government of Dubai. Emaar is appropriately well funded, profitable and consists of a skilled and laterally imaginative management team. Group companies have a customer orientation and integrated between consumer banking, home mortgage finance, technology and telecom services, and facilities management.
