A large energy complex with powerful objects of federal importance was formed on the territory of the region – Balakovo Nuclear Power Plant and Saratov Water Power Plant, total power of which is 4000 MW and 1360 MW respectively. These electric power stations generate one forth of the total electric power of the Volga region (3% of electric power generated in Russia). Moreover, main sources of energy in the region are thermal stations JSC «Saratovenergo»: SarGRES (State Regional Power Station), TETs-1 (Heat and Power Plant), TETs-2, TETs-5 (Saratov); TETs-3 (Engels); TETs-4 (Balakovo). Total power of the thermal stations is 1502 MW.

In 2004 enterprises of the heat power complex generated 41,1 billion kW/h of electric energy that is 103% against 2003. The region ranks the first in the Privolzhskiy Federal District for electric power production.

Efficiently developing system of electric power supply of cities, towns and remote villages is formed on the territory of the region. 68312 km of power network and more than 1500 km of heating system were installed.
