The Saratov Region holds 5th position in the Privolzhskiy Federal District and 23th in the Russian Federation for the growth rate of industrial production volume.

The basis of the Saratov Region’s industry is electric power industry – 24,5% of the total volume of industrial production, mechanical engineering and metal-working – 19%, food industry – 16,8%, chemical and petrochemical industry – 13,9%, fuel industry – 11%.

Mechanical engineering complex of the region comprises heavy and transport engineering industry, diesel engineering, production of spare parts for automobiles, instrument engineering, electrotechnical and electronic engineering, production of bearings and other branches.

OJSC «Trolleybus Plant» is the main supplier of trolleybuses to Russian towns and cities. Snow removal machines produced by OJSC «Transmash» are in constant demand of railway enterprises. Leading enterprises of instrument engineering and electronic industry the Central Scientific Research Institute of Measuring Instruments and OJSC «Elmash» produce unique test equipment that enable to test parameters of electronic equipment; State Scientific Production Enterprise «Contact» – microwave appliances and powerful generator lamps, optical items; State Scientific Production Enterprise «Almaz» – microwave appliances and items for telecommunication and radio location equipment.

Saratov chemical and petrochemical industry is one of the largest in Russia. The most important is production of fibers and chemical fibers, sulphuric acid, mineral fertilizers, rubber industrial items and washing powders. Leaders in this field are OJSC «Balakovo Mineral Fertilizers», OJSC «Argon», OJSC «Balakovoresinotechnica», OJSC «Henkel-Yug» and LLC «Saratovorgsintez».

The leading enterprise of the region’s food industry – OJSC «Fat Works» – now ranks the first in the Russian Federation in production of margarine products and mayonnaise.
