Farm lands of the Saratov Region occupy 8046,3 thousand hectares (79,5% of all the lands), including arable lands – 5694 thousand hectares (56,2%). Black earth soils cover 50,4% of the total lands of the region, 30% is chestnut soils.

Natural and economical peculiarities accounts for different specialization of agriculture in different areas of the regions.
On the whole its trend is cattle-breeding. In 2004 the amount of gross agricultural output amounted to 37,8 billion roubles. It was harvested 4,3 million tons, that is by 266 thousand tons more than in 2003. In 2004 the Saratov Region ranked the first for grain harvest in the Privolzhskiy Federal District and the forth among regions of Russia.
