In India, sports is viewed as a hobby rather than a
career. The biggest problem is lack of interest apart
from poor infrastructure, expert training without scientific
backup. Majority of the parents are reluctant to send
their children into full time sports beyond a level
because they believe that there is no future career
option, financial support, social security and recognition
and also it is not looked as a respectable profession
barring few sports like cricket, golf and the lifestyle
sports etc. Therefore there is no sustainable achievement
of Indian sports person at international level.
In the sports sector in India, we have very clear demarcation
of responsibility to develop sports:
Government i.e. Department of sports prepares sports
policy and fund sports (federation/association) through
SAI.
SAI creates infrastructure and provide training
to International players.
Federation /Associations of different sports are
responsible for creating awareness, giving exposure
to new players, providing training, selecting players,
marketing and organizing championships and for overall
development of sports
The role of Indian Olympic Association (IOA) is
to help participation in Asian Championship, Common
Wealth and Olympic games.
The object of the survey is to find out the view of
industry and other stakeholders about various impediments
and solution to encourage and develop Indian sports
other than cricket and lifestyle sports.
